GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - Altogether 29 candidates are in the fray for the upcoming election of the Post Graduate Students� Union (PGSU) of Gauhati University to be held on September 24.

The election will be held for 15 posts of office-bearers of the student union. According to a notice issued by the University authority, two candidates � Deepak Jyoti Deuri from the Department of Chemistry and Luckymoni Boruah from the Political Science department � will fight for the post of president.

Jitumani Kalita from the European Studies department and Rupak Das from the Commerce department will lock horns for the post of vice president. Nayan Jyoti Gogoi from the European Studies department, Palashjyoti Saikia from the Assamese department and Subrat Dutta from the Department of Mass Communication, will be locked in a triangular fight for the general secretary�s post.

Helena Swargiary from the Psychology department and Juri Devi from the Library Science department will fight for the assistant general secretary�s post.

For this election, the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) has backed their candidates for altogether 12 posts, except those of the assistant general secretary, social games and major games secretary.

The Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS), on the other hand, is supporting four candidates contesting for the posts of general secretary, literary secretary, assistant general secretary and social service secretary.

Jalukbari correspondent adds: Apart from AASU and Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti, other major student organisations like the National Students� Union of India (NSUI), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Asom Yuva Parishad (AYP) have also fielded candidates for various posts of the Union. Three candidates have already been elected unopposed.

Open debate among the candidates, which was introduced for the first time in 2016, will take place on September 22. Counting of votes will be held on September 25. Around 4,000 students will cast their votes this time.
