GUWAHATI, May 9 - President of the Medical Council of India (MCI) Dr Jayshree Mehta inaugurated the first Gastro Endoscopy Fellowship course of eastern India at Swagat Superspecialty Hospital, Maligaon here, during a three-day hands on training cum fellowship course for surgeons organised from May 5 to 7 under the aegis of the Indian Association of Gastro Intestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES).
The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Dr Reena Nayyar, secretary of MCI and Prof UC Sharma, Vice Chancellor, Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Science. Many other luminaries and leading doctors also attended the occasion including Dr DJ Bora, president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and Dr Zameer Pasha, president IAGES.
According to Prof Subhash Khanna, president elect of the association and also chairman of the organising committee, more than 70 surgeons from different parts of the country have been inducted into the fellowship programme.
The 3-day event was a new initiative of the association to train surgeons from different parts of the country in gastrointestinal endoscopy. This step has been taken by the association as there are very few medical gastroenterologists in the country who cannot reach out to all sections of society in rural areas.
