Garos, Rabhas urged to shun xenophobia

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 13 The Garo National Council of Goalpara-Kamrup District Committee has made an appeal to the people belonging to the Garo and Rabha tribes to stand united against the worshippers of violence who are out to turn the peaceful abodes of the Garos and the Rabhas on the Assam-Meghalaya borders areas into graveyards.

In a statement here, Benedict Areng, president of the GNC Goalpara-Kamrup District Committee, urged the Garos of the Assam-Meghalaya border areas to help in rehabilitating the affected Rabha families of their areas with a sense of brotherhood.

The mutual problems between the two groups could be resolved through democratic means and the people of both the groups should not lose their patience and allow themselves to be guided by xenophobia, said Areng.

Meanwhile, three other organisations of the Garos living in Assam have made an appeal to the Chief Minister of Assam to release unconditionally those Garo persons who have been lodged in the jail at Gaoalpara and other police stations of Goalpara district in connection with the ongoing incidents of violence in Assam and Meghalaya border areas.

In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, the organisations, which included Assam State unit of the Garo Students Union, Garo Sahitya Sabha and Garo Womens Federation, also called for steps to strengthen security measures in the most vulnerable areas like Bormaria, Mollonggaon (Lela), Putimari-Ginokgre (Jira), Rongjuli Garopara, Chotipara, Moghopara and Moskhuli.

They also pleaded for sending mobile medical units to the relief camps sheltering the victims of the ongoing ethnic clashes to prevent outbreak of epidemics and transfer of the Goalpara Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police for their alleged lackadaisical attitude towards the vulnerable sections of the people.

Copies of the memorandum have also been sent to the President, Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country.
