Garo woman shot in leg for �witchcraft�

TURA, Jan 4 � A woman was shot in her leg by two unknown miscreants in Bansingre village under Bajengdoba police station in North Garo Hills on December 31 night for allegedly practising witchcraft.

A man was also assaulted by the miscreants, allegedly for helping the husband of the victim escape.

According to locals, Tepilesh Ch Marak (50) had allegedly been practising witchcraft since July last year along with her husband, Fedrik Sangma (54). The death of a woman, allegedly due to witchcraft, was blamed on the couple.

Sources said two unidentified armed men visited the woman who reportedly confessed to practise witchcraft and also that the woman who passed away was being targeted by her. This led to the two opening fire on the woman, injuring her in the leg.

Her husband, who was in the house, ran for his life with the two miscreants on pursuit. He managed to reach the Bajengdoba PS and alerted the police. One Singtom Ch Marak (54) who helped the husband escape was later assaulted by the two armed men.

The police have registered a case and the injured persons were taken to Bajengdoba PHC after which the two were referred to Goalpara for further treatment. SP of NGH, JFK Marak confirmed the incident, �The attack was due to the woman practising witchcraft�.
