Garo Council holds emergency meet

BOKO, March 5 - An emergency meeting of all representatives from Garo inhabited villages of Assam was organised recently by the Garo National Council (GNC) of Kamrup and Goalpara districts in the run-up to the Assembly elections.

The meeting was attended by Chandan Keshab, chief convenor of Ajanjati-Garo Sanmillita Sangram Samiti, Belson Marak, treasurer, GNC Kamrup and Goalpara, Tharman Momin, working president of GNC and Twister Sangma, general secretary of GNC, Kopathi Sangma, president of Garo Youth Council, among others.

With an aim to contest the elections jointly with Ajanjati Suraksha Manch, the council members revealed that the GNC has selected candidates for Chayyagaon, Dudhnoi and East Goalpara constituency. Candidates for Boko reserved constituency will declare next week, they added.

The names of candidates declared by Anindra Marak, president, GNC, Kamrup district are: Bednure K Marak from Chayyagaon, Tharman Momin from Dudhnoi and Albert Marak from East Goalpara.

Chandan Keshab, president of Ajanjati Suraksha Manch, said, �We contested from Guwahati Lok Sabha in protest against the inclusion non-tribal and Garo villages in RHAC. This time, we thought the Congress would listen to our grievances, but all in vain. So it is necessary to file our candidates against in the upcoming Assembly elections.�
