GUWAHATI, Sept 7 - Members of the Gariya Development Council Demand Committee today staged a sit-in demonstration at Dighalipukhuripar, demanding among other things, formation of a Gariya Development Council comprising areas of Kamrup, Nalbari, Darrang and Nagaon.
The demonstration was organised under the aegis of ten organisations of indigenous Muslims of the State.
The Gariya Development Council Demand Committee later submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, demanding release of Rs 50 crore for the proposed council. They also stressed that the council should be headed by a Muslim from lower Assam so that the indigenous Muslims are not given a raw deal.
It also urged the Congress and the BJP to ensure that 15 Assembly seats of the State are kept reserved for the indigenous Muslims of Assam.
