GUWAHATI, Feb 1 - Ninety nine-year-old freedom fighter and dedicated Gandhian Hema Bharali is ill. She is also in a state of penury. On January 29, her bank balance was Rs 269.
The freedom fighter will turn 100 on February 19 next.
Manoj Das, Deputy General Manager of NEDFi, who met her on January 29 said that the monthly pension of the freedom fighter is Rs 20,000, which is not enough to meet the around Rs 30,000 she needs to spend on her necessities, medicines etc. There is no emergency fund to meet any exigency. The dwelling in which she is living is also under litigation, informed Das.
Under such a situation, Das said generous donations from benevolent members of the society have become extremely urgent for this nonagenarian social worker.
