Gandhi Jayanti celebrated

NAGAON, Oct 2 � To mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the World Nonviolence Day, a number of functions were organized here along with the rest of the country. Floral tributes were paid at the statue of Gandhiji, which was followed by a prayer meeting.

Several educational institutions also organised various functions to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation. In Nowgong Girls College, Prof Ranjit Baruah delivered a lecture on the life and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. An open quiz was also part of the programmes.

In Nowgong College, Dr Bibha Goswami, Prof Baparanjan Das, and a student Subham Goswami delivered talks about different activities of the Mahatma. The meet was chaired by principal Dr Sarat Barkataki. ADP College also marked the occasion with a series of programmes.

Our Biswanath Chariali Correspondent adds: Along with the nation, the birthday of the Father of the Nation was also celebrated in this tea town on the north bank of the Brahmaputra. In Biswanath College students and teachers gathered on the campus to offer floral tributes to the portrait of the Mahatma.

A meeting was later held presided over by Dr Balin Hazarika, principal of the college. Dr Dimbeswar Phukan, Dr Nagen Borthakur, member of the college governing body, Thuleswar Nath, Taranath Mahanta and Dr Nipam Kumar Saikia in their speeches dwelt at length on the pertinence of Gandhism in the present context.

Chiranta Talukdar, Amarjyoti Borthakur, Nandini Hazarika, Binit Borah and some other students performed patriotic songs, while Pulak Sabhapandit recited a poem of patriotic appeal.

The Gandhi Jayanti was also celebrated at Deshpran Lakshmidhar Sharma Jatiya Vidyalaya, where educationist Ranaprasad Hazarika and teacher Babita Borthakur, among others spoke.

Our Udalguri Correspondent adds: The Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated today in different parts of Udalguri district with a day-long agenda. In Udalguri town, Thaneswar Malakar, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri paid floral tributes to the Father of the Nation at the Gandhi Smarak at the DC office courtyard. Civilians and government officials alike attended the function where national teacher�s award winner Nareswar Deka spoke on the Mahatma�s philosophy.

The Udalguri Town Committee also celebrated the auspicious day by paying floral tribute at the statue of the Mahatma at the Gandhi Maidan in the heart of the town. Bikramsingh Basumatary, chairman of the Udalguri Town Committee initiated the programme which was attended by a large number of civilians.

A meeting to this effect was also held at the Bishnu Rabha Kristi Sangha premises which was addressed by educationist Tarapati Upadhyaya and Udalguri District Sahitya Sabha president Manik Sarmah.

Meanwhile, many schools of the district too celebrated the auspicious day in their respective premises by holding debate and quiz competitions among the students.
