Gaddafi wounded, captured

By The Assam Tribune

TRIPOLI, Oct 20 (IANS): Libya's deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi was injured and captured Thursday by fighters of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) in Sirte, said a field commander.

Field commander Mohemmed Buras Ali Al-Maknee told Xinhua that a group of fighters from the western Libyan city of Misrata captured Gaddafi, who was severely injured, in Sirte.

Sirte is Gaddafi's birthplace.

Gaddafi has been taken away by a military helicopter to an unknown place, Al-Maknee said.

Gaddafi, who came to power in Libya in 1969, was overthrown in an uprising that began in February.

The Libyan television also reported that Gaddafi has been captured, but the report has not yet been officially confirmed by the NTC.

Mahmoud Shamman, information minister of the interim government, did not confirm the news, but told CNN that "a big fish" had been captured.

"It's a big victory for the Libyan people... it's a big fish," Shamman said in the capital city of Tripoli.

Other reports said the fallen leader was injured in both legs.
