GUWAHATI, Jan 28: A furniture godown and several rooms were gutted in a massive fire at Navodaya Nagar, Patharkuchi under Basistha Police Station on Thursday. However, no casualties were reported.

An official of the State Fire and Emergency Services said that a call was received at 3.32 pm regarding the incident.

“Eight fire tenders, four from Dispur fire station and two each from Lokhra and Panbazar fire stations, were pressed into service to douse the fire. The intensity of the fire was such that it took the firefighters nearly two and a half hours to bring it under control. All the wooden items in the shop were gutted,” the official said.

“We assume that an LPG cylinder blast had caused the fire. The total damage caused by the fire is yet to be ascertained,” he added.

A police source said that there were several thatched rooms on the premises housing the godown where its employees used to stay.
