GUWAHATI, July 3 � The Water Resources Department (WRD) of the State would be able to plug 43 breaches shortly for the time being subject to availability of funds. As per the official records, the surging floodwaters of many of the State�s rivers have so far caused 46 breaches in their embankments.
Sources in the WRD told The Assam Tribune here today that the floodwater of the Brahmaputra has caused seven breaches in its embankments and two of them � one at Sisikalghar-Tekeliphuta embankment in Dhemaji district and the other at Panpur in Sonitpur district � are wider ones.
The river has also led to channel formation in these two places making it quite impossible for the WRD to go for immediate plugging of the breaches, sources said.
The breach caused by the Kopili in its eastern bank embankment at Jamunasheet village between Karikhana and Jogijan is also a wide one and the river has opened a new channel there.
The plugging of the above two breaches could be attempted during the lean season, sources added.
The Brahmaputra has breached its embankments in Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Majuli, Sonitpur, Nagaon and Barpeta districts.
Each of the Subansiri and the Kopili has breached their embankments at one place, Dikhow has breached its embankment at two places, Brahmajan in Sonitpur district has breached its embankments at three places and the Mora Pagladiya at four places.
The Pahumara has breached its embankments at two places, the Nanoi at three places, the Nona at one place, the Kaldiya at two places, the Puthimari at two places, each of the Golondi, Harijaan channel, Mora Chaulkhowa and Ghiladhari has breached their embankments at one place.
Each of the Nadla Channel, Borolia (in Kamrup) and Bhelengi has breached their embankments at four places. The Borolia has breached its embankment at one place in Baksa district.
In the Barak Valley, the Longai has breached its embankment at one place.
The Brahmaputra had caused one breach on its right bank embankment at Manikpur in Baghbor Legislative Assembly Constituency in 2010. But due to dearth of funds, it could not be plugged so far, sources said.
