Fresh campaign against AFSPA soon in Manipur

By Newmai News

IMPHAL, Sept 14 - NGOs in Manipur have affirmed to campaign against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) with renewed vigour. They said that AFSPA should be repealed for good from the entire Northeastern region.

Members of Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Manipur in association with Extra-Judicial Execution Victims Families Association Manipur (EEVFAM), Human Rights Alert (HRA), Human Rights Defenders, Manipur (HRDM) and Just Peace Foundation (JPF), said that they will launch a campaign soon to repeal the AFSPA.

The human rights defenders told reporters here that under the impunity guaranteed by AFSPA, security forces have been committing human rights violations all these years. They demanded that AFSPA should be repealed from the whole of North East. They also said that they will continue to campaign against the draconian law until it is repealed.

In May this year civil society organisations and activists based in Manipur had called for a concerted and renewed campaign for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958.

In 2004, one Thangjam Manorama was killed by security forces personnel in Imphal East district. The people rose up in protest against the killing, and subsequently demanded for the repeal of AFSPA from the State.
