Free cancer screening camp held

MANGALDAI, Dec 4 - On the occasion of World AIDS Day, a free health camp-cum-awareness camp on cancer and screening for uterine cervical cancer was organised at no. 1 Gerimari village by AMC (Assam Medical College) Alumni Association and Academic Forum, Guwahati in collaboration with the Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang and the local unit of the mahila samiti.

An awareness meeting on the ill effects of tobacco on health was also organised by the District Tobacco Control Cell, Darrang. Dr NK Beria, SDM, Darrang as the speaker elaborately discussed about tobacco use and cancer diseases of mouth, breast, uterus etc.

Screening for pre-cancerous conditions and cancer of mouth was done by a team of dental surgeons under the supervision of Dr Himangshu Das.

More than 100 patients, mainly women of reproductive age group, children and senior citizens benefited from the camp.

A team from Dr Anjana Phookan Memorial Foundation under the supervision of Dr Shamsul Haque, senior gynaecologist, Mangaldai Civil Hospital carried out the pap smear test for screening of uterine cervical cancer of the attending women patients, above 35 years of age.

The day-long camp was attended by doctors, paramedical staff, members of the mahila samiti, school teachers, staff besides local leading persons, including prominent social activist Renu Nath.
