Fraternity football tournament for peace

KOHIMA, July 9 � In an attempt to pursuing peace and tranquility in the Assam-Nagaland border areas, specifically in Sibsagar-Jorhat-Mokokchung sector, a fraternity football tournament was organised where thousands of spectators from both the States witnessed the final match between Sporting Club, Tuli versus Sivasagar XI.

The Trans-Border Running Football Tournament, began on June 28 and ended yesterday, was organised by Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland) at Athkhel playground of Geleki in Sibsagar district bordering Tuli area of Mokokchung district.

At the outset of the tie, a cultural extravaganza was held where Tuli MLA Temjen Jamir reminded the people about the age-old relationship between the Nagas and the Assamese people and called upon all to further strengthen this bond and fraternity for maintenance of peace and tranquility in border areas.

He also appreciated various initiatives undertaken by the Border Peace Committee for developing better understanding among the people living in both sides of the inter-State border and Sibsagar district administration for making the tournament a grand success.

Nazira MLA Debabrata Saikia, son of former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, who formally inaugurated the final match yesterday, hoped that this event would go a long way for the people of Assam and Nagaland for ushering in mutual trust and peace.

Sporting Club Tuli was beaten by Sibasagar XI in a tie breaker after the teams scored 1-1 during the allotted time of the match.

Altogether 10 football teams, five each from Assam side and Mokokchung, took part in the tournament.

Later in the evening a grand cultural extravaganza was held where troupes from both sides took part.

Upper Assam commissioner Iftikhar Hussain, Sibsagar deputy commissioner Jatindra Lahkar, Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former Nazira MLA Hemaprova Saikia, Tuli SDO (civil) Chubatemjen and officials from both sides were present during the event. � PTI
