AGARTALA, Nov 11 Aiming to promote the rich indigenous culture, four universities Mumbai, Delhi, Manipal and SNDT look set to introduce either a Department or a Chair for inspiring personalities from the North East region.

The four leading varsities of the country have agreed on introduction of either a Department or C chair in the names inspiring persons from the North East region and this would become a reality by January 26 next year, said Governor PB Acharya.

Interacting with mediapersons at the Raj Bhavan here today, the Governor said, Opening of a Department or a Chair will make the indigenous people of the region feel equality. There will also be a great change in the mindset.

Making it clear that education and empowerment of indigenous people would be his top priority, Acharya said 30 per cent of tribal people in Tripura have been denied opportunities due to historical reasons and now the time has come to provide a major fillip in the opportunities.

Referring to his recent visit to the US, the Governor said he had attended a programme initiated by International Central for Cultural Studies (ICCS) and other programmes there. I have found some similarities in between indigenous people from North East and the indigenous tribes in US. We can bank on these similarities for mutual benefits, he pointed out.
