Four killed in Tripura landslips

AGARTALA, May 18 - Heavy pre-monsoon rain in Tripura this time is taking a heavy toll of lives in different parts of the State besides causing immense hardship to the people, specially to those living in low-lying areas and in the heart of the city here which is on plain and low land.

Already 11 people including women and children have died from lightning and also by drowning in swollen rivers. In a tragic incident, a massive landslide took the lives of three tribals of a family at Gobindapara in West Tripura district on Friday morning while the lone surviving member is struggling for life in GBP hospital here.

Sources from Subalsingh said that due to heavy downpour from early hours of today the mud-walled house of the tribal family had collapsed and the three died on the spot.

The neighbours rescued the bodies from the under the debris and rushed the injured one to GBP hospital. In yet another incident at Belfang under Hezamara block one more tribal inmate died on the spot as the mud-walled house collapsed on him.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has announced a compensation package of Rs 5 lakh each for the affected families and other measures to help them from the disaster relief fund of the State Government.

The CM also moved around in different parts of the town, specially in Banamalipur area, his Assembly constituency, in knee-deep water to see the condition of people.

Almost the entire town went under water because of lack of drainage and sewerage and continuous rain from the early hours of today.

During past twenty four hours 242 mm of rain has been recorded by office of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The State Government has already sought Rs 59 crore from Centre to tide over the situation.
