Four arrested in murder of policeman

By CORRESPONDENT

TURA, Dec 8 - Four persons were arrested for the alleged killing of a policeman in Damas village in North Garo Hills yesterday.

Former president of Damas Youth Forum Manseng Ch Momin was amongst those arrested after they brutally beat up a havildar of 3rd MLP battalion, Samson D Sangma, leading to his death.

The other three accused, arrested along with Manseng have been identified as Leling Marak, Grimchi Shira and Rongrik Marak. All four accused hail from Damas where the incident took place.

On the night of December 4, the four alleged culprits, after a dispute, began to brutally assault the havildar. After the beating, a compromise had been sought leading to the victim being taken to Dainadubi PHC for treatment. The victim was later referred to Goalpara and then taken to Guwahati. However, he died while on way to Guwahati.

A case of murder was lodged at Dainadubi outpost on Dec 6 after the death of the havildar. All the accused had allegedly absconded by then. They were, however, arrested yesterday by police.

The family of the victim has alleged that the beatings may have been orchestrated by his first wife. She had left him after which he took up a second wife in Damas. The first wife had complained to the villagers and DYF president asking him to be expelled from the village, said a family member.

Police sources have not ruled out the use of money for the assault. We are looking at that angle as well. The four are now being questioned on the matter, said Dalton Marak, SP of North Garo Hills.
