Food processing should be home-based industry: Dr Heptulla

IMPHAL, Nov 28 - Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla today said food processing should be a home-based industry.

Speaking at the inaugural function of a conference on �Startups and MSMEs in food processing� here, Dr Heptulla said: �When we talk of industries, we always think of big infrastructure. But the actual work should start from the micro level and the home-based industry.�

Calling for adoption of value-addition technology, the Governor said one can take up food processing under the startup schemes of the Government.

Dr Heptulla highlighted the need to create awareness about the Centrally-sponsored schemes among the public in English and the local languages.

Manipur being home to different varieties of fruits, vegetables and other agro products, it provides immense opportunities in the food processing industry. The Governor added that if properly harvested, processed and packaged fruits and vegetables of the State will have good demands in both the domestic and international markets.

In his speech, Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh said that biotechnology can aid in increased production of crops and fruits. Pointing out the relevance of the conference topic, the minister also stressed the importance of crop rotation.

Manipur Rural Bank Chairman Dr Prasanna Kumar Bal highlighted the problems faced in repayment of loans, which is holding back banks to go full throttle in assisting micro, small and medium enterprises.

Principal Secretary (Horticulture and Soil Conservation) JC Ramthanga, other officials of the Manipur Rural Bank, Manipur Small Farmers� Agribusiness Consortium, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Manipur centre, Regional Centre, Organic Farming, Manipur, bankers and entrepreneurs attended the day�s conference.
