Focus now on election of PCC chiefs in poll-bound States

By The Assam Tribune

New Delhi, Sept 5 (PTI): With the election for the post of Congress president over, all eyes are now focussed on who would head the party units in the poll-bound States, given Sonia Gandhi's penchant for giving Chief Ministership to the State PCC chiefs.

Assembly elections are scheduled next year in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, West Bengal and Assam. The year 2012 will witness Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

Partymen expect that in States where Congress is playing a second fiddle to regional parties, the State chiefs could aspire for other crucial posts including that of Deputy Chief Minister.

In West Bengal, Congress has declared that it would be an ally of Trinamool Congress whose leader Mamata Banerjee is seen as the Chief Ministerial candidate. Manas Bhunia has recently been made the WBPCC Chief after senior leader Pranab Mukherjee moved out pleading preoccupation with other matters.
