GUWAHATI, Dec 29 - The police and the civic administration have initiated a slew of measures and formed special flying squads to check drunken-driving and other untoward activities on the New Year�s eve in the city.
The police administration has asked all the deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) to keep a tab on zigzag riding of two-wheelers on the city roads as well as the highways. The traffic wing has also chalked out a roadmap to address the movement of vehicular traffic and keep a close eye on the rules violators, especially the motorists.
Sources informed that the law enforcers have geared up to ensure that no untoward incidents take place in the names of New Year revelry.
In addition to that, the Excise department has also constituted teams to monitor the wine shops and bars so that they do not operate beyond the permissible limit.
�Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure that the New Year celebrations pass off peacefully. Anybody found flouting the norms would be fined heavily and legal action would follow. Anybody who tries to create trouble would be dealt with an iron hand,� a senior Assam Police official said.
The senior official further stated that the police checking teams would remain on the move till late into the night.
�Majority of the security personnel, including the paramilitary forces, would be on the roads to keep an eye on the late-night revellers, especially those opting to drive under the influence of alcohol,� sources stated.
�Last year too, we had taken action against hundreds of such erring drivers and this time too, we would keep a close eye on them,� sources asserted.
Sources further stated that the administration has already issued an advisory to hotels, restaurants, pubs and discotheques.
�If required, we will launch special drives against gambling and rave parties. A special team will be on the job against consumption and peddling of drugs in and around the city. The anti-drug squad will be on 24x7 alert,� sources added.
