Floods hit five districts

GUWAHATI, June 25 � The overall flood situation in the State has marginally improved today. Though five districts have been affected by the current wave of flood, the number of people affected by the disaster has gone down to 20,105 today from yesterday�s 24,393, said the flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) this evening. It has named Lakhimpur, Darrang, Sonitpur, Kamrup and Udalguri as the districts affected by flood.

The bulletin said flood has been reported from 33 villages of five revenue circles. The revenue circles affected are � Nowboicha in Lakhimpur district; Dalgaon in Darrang district; Halem in Sonitpur district, Goroimari in Kamrup district and Mazbat in Udalguri district.

Five relief camps are operational � four in Darrang and one in Udalguri � to look after the flood-affected people. The number of people taking shelter in these camps is 8,921.

As per a Central Water Commission (CWC) report, the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat, the Jiabharali in Sonitpur district and the Beki in Barpeta district are flowing above the danger level.
