TURA, July 15 - The flood situation in the plain belt of Garo Hills worsened with water now flowing above the Solairtek Nagabund embankment this evening.
The region over the past ten days has seen a steady rise in water levels of both the Brahmaputra and its tributary, Jinjiram. It has now crossed the danger mark. The situation is expected to further worsen as the breach in the embankment means a threat to Phulbari town.
Local MLA of Phulbari constituency, SG Esmatur Mominin today went on a survey of flooded areas. While on the tour at about 1 pm, the water was about two feet below the embankment. However, by evening it is now overflowing.
�We are doing our utmost to help the affected people. All villages in the low-lying belts have been flooded. Relief camps have been set up and relief is expected soon. However, the rise in water levels is unprecedented in a long time and alarmingly still rising,� said Mominin during the survey.
The deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills, Ram Singh said 19 relief camps have been set up in the two affected Blocks of Demdema and Selsella.
Till yesterday, over 150 villages in the two C&RD Blocks with a population of about 1.10 lakh were estimated to be affected. The numbers are expected to rise tomorrow as more information comes in from remote areas. The administration has also announced seven days gratuitous relief (GR) for the victims of the deluge.
