Flood situation turns grim again: Death toll 75

GUWAHATI, July 24 - Under the impact of heavy rainfall activities, flood waters are inundating more areas in Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Bongaigaon and Chirang districts. As of today, a total number of around 34 lakh people in 2,933 villages under 73 revenue circles of 20 districts are reeling under floodwaters, while the death toll due to flood this year has gone up to 75 today with the fresh reports of six cases of flood-related death coming from several districts during the past 24 hours, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) here this evening.

The ASDMA said that the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat and Cachar, are still facing the wrath of flood.

Presently, 826 relief camps are operational in the districts of Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat and Jorhat. There are around 2 lakh inmates in these relief camps. Moreover, 107 relief distribution centres in the districts of Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, South Salmara, Kamrup, Morigaon and Golaghat are also operational as of today.

According to the bulletin of the Central Water Commission (CWC) here this afternoon, the Brahmaputra (at Neamatighat and Dhubri, with rising trend), the Jiabharali (at NT Road Crossing), the Puthimari (at NH Road Crossing with rising trend), the Kushiyara (at Karimganj), the Manas (at NH Road Crossing), the Beki (at Road Bridge) are flowing above their respective danger levels.
