By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Aug 27 - The flood situation in Manipurs Senapati district improved considerably on Sunday with waters of Barak river and its tributaries flowing below the red mark while the traffic along Imphal-Mao sector of National Highway 2 has also been resumed, reports said.

Senapati district headquarters had witnessed the worst flood in the last three decades after heavy rain wreaked havoc in the early hours of Saturday, causing flash floods in the Barak riverbeds of the hilly district forcing many villagers to flee to safer places. Mudslides also blocked the traffic along the NH 2. But there was no report of any casualty.

An orphanage at Karong housing 120 children was washed away by the flood water. The children are now taking shelter at a hostel and junior school.

The flash flood and mudslide washed away at least 22 houses at Chakhumei besides damaging other properties in Karong and Senapati towns.

The district authority is taking up steps to provide relief materials.
