SHILLONG, April 22 - Heavy rain has led to a flood-like situation in at least seven villages of South West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya. However, there has been no report of any loss of life, reports PTI.
The incessant rain since Friday has submerged houses, agricultural land, besides damaging roads in seven low-lying areas of the district.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has directed district officials to provide relief to the affected families.
At least four families of Silkona village have been given shelter at a local school because of the flood-like situation, district DC Cyril V Diengdoh said.
Seven villages under Zikzak Community & Rural Development block, namely Silkona, Nandirchar, Beparipara, Hridaypur, Daspara, Patelipara and New Kalaichar were the worst-hit, he said.
Paddy fields in Mahendraganj area were submerged and BDOs and field staff were trying to assess the damage, he said.
The District Disaster Management Agency has deployed officials and �gram sevaks� on the field for conducting actual ground assessment and set up relief camps, should the need arise.
Tura Correspondent adds: Incessant rainfall over the past two days in entire Garo Hills region has raised the fear of floods though the situation is still under control. Parts of North Garo Hills have, however, faced the wrath of storm with houses in three villages being damaged by strong winds and rains.
Strong winds in Resubelpara block even led to trees snapping in half.
Rivers across the region have been reported to be close to danger level leading to the administration keeping a close watch on developments.
�All rivers are in spate though people have not been affected by floods yet. We are keeping a close watch on the situation,� said acting DC of West Garo Hills, DD Shira.
In East Garo Hills, residents reported the Simsang river to be flowing close to the danger mark with the river also affecting South Garo Hills. Other rivers were also in spate.
In WGH, the Ganol river is also flowing close to the danger mark while in NGH, the Didram, Damring and Manda rivers were close to breaching the danger mark. A section of the under construction bridge near Gokol in NGH was washed away by the rains.
