Flood death toll rises to 69

GUWAHATI, July 23 - With the fresh reports of two more cases of death, due to flood, received from the districts of Morigaon and Golaghat during the past 24 hours, the total flood-related death toll in the State rose to 69 today this year. Floodwaters are again inundating more areas, upsetting the overall situation in the State, with the resumption of heavy rainfall activities since yesterday, over the districts of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Baksa, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) here this evening.

It said that as of today, a total population of 28 lakhs in 2,523 villages under 68 revenue circles of the 19 districts of Dhemaji, Biswanath, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat and Cachar, are still reeling under floodwaters.

Presently, 659 relief camps are operational in the districts of Darrang, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat and Jorhat and together they have a total 1, 03,934 flood-hit people as their inmates. Moreover, 123 relief distribution centres in the districts of Darrang, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Morigaon and Golaghat are also operational as of today.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger level at Neamatighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri, while the Jia Bharali (at N T Road Crossing, Sonitpur), the Puthimari (at N H Road Crossing, Kamrup), the Beki (at Road Bridge, Barpeta), the Gaurang (at Kokrajhar) and the Kushiyara (at Karimganj) are also flowing above their danger levels, said the ASDMA.
