Flash flood in Bongaigaon

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, July 23 - Flash flood caused by incessant rain submerged a vast area of Bongaigaon town and its adjacent areas affecting peoples normal life.

The flood water washed away a culvert on the entrance of the office of the Superintendent of Police here at Paglasthan today.

Over 200 people were rescued by an SDRF-NDRF team at Palpara in the town today. The rescued persons have been lodged at a school and a public hall in the same locality.

Waterlogging in the Railway workshop at New Bongaigaon forced its workers to suspend their works for the day.

The plying of vehicles on the main road between Mayapuri cinema and fly-over remained suspended after flood water inundated it and entered residential areas.

Local people out of rage took to the streets and demanded a solution to the waterlogging problem of the town, created by newly-constructed drains through which water cannot pass from one place to other.

The Public Works Department (PWD) had constructed these drains without any scientific knowledge of water-flow, hence most of these drains have blocked the water-flow in several spots in the town, local people alleged adding that earlier Deputy Commissioner Babulal Sarma had seen the technical faults of these drains and sought correction from the PWD and the contractor. But he was transferred before he could act against the anomaly.
