Flash flood hits many villages in Chirang dist

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, July 10 - Sudden rush of rain water flowing down from neighbouring Bhutan has caused flash floods in several villages in the northern part of Chirang district.

Flood waters have reportedly snapped parts of old dams in some village areas submerging hamlets near the India-Bhutan border areas.

In Bijni subdivision, several villages near rivers have been affected by flash floods since last night. Rivers originating from Bhutan have submerged low-lying areas in Chirang district and forced villagers to take shelter on highlands.

Every year, floods cause massive damage to those villages located near the Bhutan border areas and the low-lying rural areas in northern parts of the district due to the lack of an effective flood mitigation policy of the BTC administration, villagers alleged.
