Five held for theft in Majuli

MAJULI, Oct 16 - Five persons were arrested for theft in a joint operation of police and CRPF personnel on Friday here.

The police team, which was lead by the SP of Majuli district, arrested the thieves from their residences.

The accused have been identified as Papoli Das and Ram Das of Rangoli Bahar Gaon, Manas Rajput of Chataikur Gaon, Nabin Saikia of No-1 Fuloni Gaon, and Deben Hazarika of Fuloni Chariali.

According to reports, the gang has stolen Rs 1.5 lakh case and gold ornaments from the house of retired teacher Bipin Hazarika at Silikhaguri on August 19. Besides, the gang also allegedly stole cash and ornaments from the house of one Jiten Bora at Rangachahi area and from the house of one Arun Gayan at Perabhari on October 3.

The police said that another member of the gang, Amio Pegu of Muamari Gaon, is still on the run, adding that some of the stolen properties were recovered from their possession.
