Five die in Bhalukpong landslide

ITANAGAR, July 1 - At least five persons, including a child, were killed and six others feared trapped under the debris after a massive landslide triggered by heavy and incessant rains hit Bhalukpong in Arunachal Pradesh�s West Kameng district today.

�Bodies of five persons, including the child, have been recovered by the rescue workers from the district administration with the help of local people,� said an official source from Bomdila, headquarters of West Kameng district.

The tragedy occurred when landslides triggered by heavy rains swept away the old Inspection Bungalow at Bhalukpong and some government quarters, reportedly burying about a dozen people. The Bhalukpong Circuit House and several departmental stores were also partially damaged in the disaster.

Meanwhile, State Governor JP Rajkhowa has expressed shock and grieved the loss of lives in the landslide at Bhalukpong. He also announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh for the next of kin of each of the victims killed in the landslide.
