By A Correspondent

GANGTOK, Nov 29 - A team of doctors performed the first neurosurgery in Sikkim at the STNM Multi-Speciality Hospital at Sochyagang here. Previously, all neurosurgery cases used to be referred to hospitals outside the State, but with the appointment of two neurosurgeons by the government, the service is now available in the State.

Dr Pranav Rai, MBBS, MS (Surgery), MCh (neurosurgery), who was assisted by anaesthetists Dr Nilima and Dr Kinga, and OT staff, successfully conducted the operation on a 61-year-old individual. Similarly, gastroenterologists conducted OPD consultations and performed gastro-intestinal endoscopy, band ligations of esophageal varices for the first time in the State at the Gyalshing District Hospital. OPD consultations by paediatric surgeons and cardiologists have also started at the Namchi District Hospital.

The Super Specialist District Outreach Programme has been gaining traction in the State in the last few months due to its success and is in high demand. It has been very helpful in reaching out and catering to the people at the grassroots level which was previously non-existent.

I express my gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, staff and the people who have been working tirelessly to make this programme a success. I encourage them to carry on with their noble deed to further enhance the medical facilities in the State, said Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
