First gold for Assam

IMPHAL, March 6 - Weightlifter Swapana Priya Barua bagged the first gold medal for Assam in the ongoing 2nd edition of the National Level North East Games at the Khuman Lampak sports complex in Imphal on Sunday.

With Swapana�s gold in women�s 69kg weightlifting competition besides Gouranga Baruah�s silver in men�s 85kg weightlifting, Assam occupies the 6th place in the medals tally while host Manipur occupies the first position followed by Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

Meghalaya team which bagged one silver and 19 bronze medal is yet to get a gold medal in the games which are scheduled to conclude on Monday.

On the other hand, Manipur clinched the gold medal in both men�s and women�s hockey while Mizoram secured the runners up title. Assam had to be content with the third place finish in both the categories.

The men�s football final between Mizoram and Nagaland will be played tomorrow while the women�s final between Manipur and Nagaland is also scheduled on Monday.

Tripura team dominates athletics and have so far secured 8 gold medals. In long jump (women), Minali Sinhi bagged gold (5.25m) while Nagaland�s Aungkali secured silver (4.95m). In 4x400 relay (women), Tripura team won gold (4:15:29) while Nagaland team (4:24:29) managed the silver medal. Manipur team clocked 3:27:51 to win the gold while Tripura team managed to get the silver (3:34:30) in 4x400 relay (men). Even though Purabi Debnath of Tripura bagged gold (36.00m) in women�s discus, Mizoram�s Rameng Mawi Sailo secured the silver (31.22m). Nagaland�s Khrielahuo and Khrutsizo won both gold (35.17m) and silver (34.27m) in men�s discus.

In women�s 3000m Nagaland�s Tuchoi won the gold(11:02:57) while Manipur�s S Primila ensured the silver (11:38:10).

In men�s 3000m Kh Ronajit of Manipur annexed the title (9:04:32) followed by Shyamshar Wahlong (9:05:46) of Meghalaya.
