SILCHAR, June 22 � A devastating fire broke out in Karatigram area in Rongpur close to the river Barak here on Saturday, leaving hundreds of people homeless.
According to the neighbours, the fire broke out at a colony opposite Mahamaya School around 1:30 am. As many as 12 fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames but by the time the fire was brought under control, over hundred homes were destroyed and many were left with serious injuries.
Locals said that two people have sustained grave injuries because of the fire and have been admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. There have been no reports of any casualty as yet. People are saying that the fire broke out due to short circuit.
Local MLA Dilip Kumar Paul and civic board chairman Niharendra Narayan Thakur have visited the fire victims and assured assistance. Meanwhile, relief materials are being supplied to the victims.
