By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, April 19 - The police lodged a suo moto FIR against Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Pradyot Kishore Debbarma for assaulting a tribal youth and abusing police personnel inside the Khowai Police Station, official sources confirmed here today.

It may be mentioned here that the vehicle of Debbarmas sister and Congress candidate for East Tripura Pragna Devi was stoned while she was returning from Tulasikhar to Khowaiin Khowai district on Thursday evening. Security personnel accompanying Pragna managed to get hold of a stone-pelter and took him to the Khowai Police Station.

Incensed by the news of the attack on his sister, the TPCC president, accompanied by disbanded ATTF militant chief Ranjit Debbarma, went to the police station and allegedly slapped the stone-pelter.

After Debbarma left the police station, police officers registered a suo moto FIR against him under Sections 447 (criminal trespassing), 352 (assault or application of criminal force without provocation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation).

While TPCC vice president Tapas Dey alleged there was a bid on the life of the Congress candidate, the BJP and its ally, IPFT, condemned the act of the royal scion, Debbarma.

Both the Congress and the CPI(M) have hatched a conspiracy to derail the electoral process, fearing yet another crushing defeat. The TPCC presidents action inside a police station was part of the ploy to terrorise the police, said Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath.

IPFT supremo and Revenue Minister NC Debbarma also condemned the TPCC presidents alleged misbehaviour and sought stringent punishment as per rule of law.
