Felicitation volume on Dr Satish Ch Bhattacharyya released

TEZPUR, Nov 3 - A felicitation volume on noted epigraphist, Dr Satish Chnadra Bhattacharyya, Dr Satish Chandra Bhattacharyya � Jibon, Sadhana Aru Ananya, was released today at the Baliram Kahkar Auditorium, Asomiya Club here in commemoration of his invaluable contributions towards epigraphical study of ancient inscriptions and coins of the State.

Speaking at the function, Dr Biren Das, Registrar, Tezpur University said that the book was indeed a recognition of the extremely painstaking work of Dr Bhattacharyya. �He has an exclusive study in the field of epigraphy and we are hopeful that his enthusiasm and honesty will take him a long way ahead in this line.�

It may be mentioned that Dr Bhattacharyya (75) was a former vice-principal of Darrang College. He did a major project under the UGC from 2007 to 2011 on a �Study of the Inscriptions of Assam�. He has to his credit the deciphering of the Khaspur Inscription of the ancient Kachari kings, among other inscriptions. He was also at the forefront of an agitation to save the famous Bhomoraguri Rock Inscription from being destroyed during the construction of the Bhomoraguri bridge over the Brahmaputra.

Other dignitaries present in the event also spoke on Dr Bhattacharyya�s contribution towards the society through his literary works. In his welcome address from the president�s chair, Dr Madan Sharma fprmer professor, Tezpur University said that Dr Bhattacharyya became a research scholar only due to his thorough studies. �Book reading helps an individual to mould his temperament.� Noted Sanskrit scholar, and retired HoD, Sanskrit, Gauhati University Dr Banikanta Sarmah observed that literature means books but every book cannot be considered literature. �Presently publication of books is increasing, but the question is whether these books are read by the people or not. A good book is one that makes the reader feel. It takes the reader forward on a compelling journey. Calling a book �good� is an opinion that can be applied to any book. I believe that a book can be considered good if it reflects literature and society�s well being.�

The programme was presided over by the retired professor of Tezpur University Dr Madan Sarma and conducted by noted journalist Pankaj Baruah. A host of dignitaries including the Vice Chancellor, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit And Ancient Studies University, Dr Deepak Sharma, Dr Abani Sharma, Darrang College, Hemanta Barua of Dhekiajuli LOKD College among others attended the programme.
