Federer cruises into French Open qtrs

By The Assam Tribune

PARIS, May 29 (Agencies): Roger Federer set another Grand Slam record Sunday, extending his quarterfinal streak at major tournaments to 28 with a 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Olympic gold medal doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka at the French Open.

The 16-time major champion, who completed a career Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 2009, improved on the mark he shared with Jimmy Connors.

The last time Federer failed to reach the quarterfinals at a major was at the 2004 French Open, when he was the top-seeded player but lost to Gustavo Kuerten in the third round.

Federer again dominated with his serve. He was broken once early in the third set, but broke back twice to remain one of the four players to have won every match in straight sets.

Earlier, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat fellow Russian and third seed Vera Zvonareva 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in a low-quality contest on Sunday to become the first woman through to the French Open quarter-finals.

Zvonarevas demise means this is the first time since tennis turned professional in 1968 that none of the top three seeds reached the womens last eight at Roland Garros.

Zvonareva made a shaky start following a slip but broke back twice to go 4-2 up in the first set before folding again and allowing the 14th seed to prevail in the tiebreak.

She picked herself up to race through the second set before a turgid third where both players failed to show a killer instinct and just sent down a succession of baseline bombers.

Pavlyuchenkova sealed the key break for 4-2 though after Zvonareva went long with an off-balance backhand before closing out another forgettable match in the uninspiring womens draw.
