FCI, Ganga garner vital points

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 21 - Ganga SC and Food Corporation of India (FCI) Sports Club gained vital points in the RG Baruah Super Division Football League.

In two matches of the league played at the Nehru Stadium here today, Ganga SC defeated Gauhati Town Club (GTC) 2-0 while FCI prevailed over Sunrise Athletic Club 4-1.

Both the teams were at the bottom of the table with four points each and after todays wins they raised their points to seven. Both the teams will face each other on September 23.

A draw is enough for Ganga to stay in the Super League while the FCI team is in a must win situation as they are falling behind Ganga in goal difference.

On the first ground Gangas Nigerian striker Olatunde Timothy netted both the goals in the 35th and extended time (90+). It was a low-paced match on the heavy under-foot condition. Players of both the teams had to toil in order to overcome the unfavourable ground condition.

Gangas first goal came off a spot kick. Town defender Bonny Singh brought down Ganga striker PC Vanlalhmangaizuala inside the box and a penalty was awarded to Ganga. Timotyh beat the opponent custodian Mithun Samanta with a neatly taken shot. Timothys second goal came off a goal mouth melee.

The FCI-Sunrise match was a one-sided affair as the FCI boys took control of the situation from the word go. It was, perhaps, their best performance in this years league.

Ashis opened the account for FCI in the 16th minute but substitute Rahul Boro levelled in the 36th minute. However, Mithinga Narzary gave FCI advantage before the break scoring in the 42nd minute.

After the break the FCI players romped into attack and netted two more goals.

Substitute Samujal Rabha scored both the goals in the 65th and 72nd minutes respectively.

Todays matches: Green Valley vs ASEB; Navajyoti vs NF Rly (both Championship Round).
