Faulty construction of bridge protested

By Correspondent

JAMUGURIHAT, April 12 Hundreds of irate people in No. 2 Christian Basti, Balijuri, under North Jamuguri damaged the properties of a contractor after a school student was seriously injured while crossing an under-construction RCC bridge, in the village.

The construction of the RCC bridge and the PMGSY road from Marisuti to Balijuri had been undertaken by one Kaushik Bhattacharya which was inaugurated by the then Sootea MLA Praneswar Basumatary on February 12, 2006. Though the work should have been completed within five years, neither the road nor the RCC bridge has been completed till date. The construction of the bridge is alleged to be faulty as the top of the bridge is not properly constructed and the two approaches are already caving in. The bridge has now become a death trap, as accidents are occurring from time to time. The contractor concerned rarely visits the site, it is alleged and all protests by the suffering people have gone in vain.

Police-dacoits clash: The deteriorating condition of law and order has assumed such a proportion in Assam that leave alone common people, even the law enforcers have had to bear the brunt of dacoit attack. In a recent incident, the driver and the helper of a 16-wheeled truck were taking food at a dhaba near Chaibari under Jamuguri Police Station recently when they came to know that three men were pilfering diesel from the vehicle. While they came to stop them, they were attacked. In the meantime a police patrol party arrived on the spot and tried to nab them but they too were attacked and a constable was seriously injured.
