BARPETA, July 22 - The fast unto death by a group of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) activists at Sarthebari demanding repairing of roads in Sarukshetri completed the third day today.
Dandi Nath Barman, working president of KMSS Barpeta district committee, Manir Ali and Bipul Thakuria both organising secretaries of the district committee, Mitul Deka, secretary of Barpeta sub divisional committee and Dhanjit Barman executive member of the sub divisional committee began their agitation in front of the PWD inspection bungalow at Sarthebari since July 20 last.
Various other leaders and workers of the organisation and local people have also joined with them to express their solidarity.
The agitators demanded repairing of all the roads in Sarukshetri constituency in Barpeta district. The agitators alleged that the government has gone against its own words by compelling them to adopt path of agitation. Dandi Nath Barman who led the team informed that they organised such an agitation in July last year with similar demand which ended following an assurance by the district administration that the roads in this area will be repaired soon. It was endorsed in a meeting held in the conference room of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Barpeta a year ago. But it is a matter of regret that no step was taken to repair the roads. So they have decided to remind the authorities about their commitment.
It must be mentioned here that all the roads and excess roads in Sarukshetri constituency of Barpeta district are in its worst stage for several years. Some of them are closed due to breach by flood. People of this area have been running from pillar to post requesting solution to the vexed problem. But the authorities concerned have turned a deaf ear to the genuine demand of the people.
