Fast-track court demanded for trial

MIRZA, Aug 30 - Simmering tension prevailed in South Kamrup over the alleged murder of Kabita Baruah Das (35) at Kandupur village under Palasbari Police Station in Kamrup district.

According to family sources, Kabita Baruah Das was a victim of pre-planned murder by her husband Krishna Das (42), Pabita Das (sister of Krishna Das) and Putul Das (72, (mother of Krishna Das) of Kandupur village under Palasbari PS on the night of August 20 last.

It may be mentioned here that the body of Kabita Baruah Das was found hanging in the house of her husband, but as per family sources of Kabita Baruah Das, several injury marks were noticed in the body of the victim.

The father of Kabita Baruah Das, who was married to Krishna Das from Majirgaon village under Palasbari PS in Kamrup district, had lodged a case in Palasbari PS on August 21. Several hundred people belonging to Majirgaon area had gheraoed the Palasbari PS demanding immediate arrest of Krishna Das, Pabita Das and Putul Das alleging that the trio had allegedly murdered Kabita Baruah Das in cold blood.

Sources said police took serious note of the case and arrested all the three accused persons, namely Krishna Das, Pabita Das and Putul Das. All the accused have already been remanded to judicial custody.

The irate mob also torched the house of Krishna Das and reduced it to ashes alongwith other valuable properties on August 21.

The incident took an ugly turn on August 26 when over several thousand people, including public leaders, women, students and members of the general public gheraoed the office of Circle Officer of Palasbari Circle and created chaos in the office premises demanding exemplary punishment to the culprits involved in this heinous crime.

Later, the protesters under the banner of AASU Kamrup district unit, South Kamrup Mahila Samiti, citizens of Majirgaon and Kandupur village submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister where it was demanded to set up a fast-track court for speedy trial of the murder case of Kabita Baruah Das, besides demanding hanging of the culprits associated with the murder case.

The villagers of Majirgaon alleged that Krishna Das had been torturing his wife Kabita Baruah Das since many years after her marriage. The father of Kabita Baruah Das said that his daughter had lodged a case some years back against Krishna Das alleging physical and mental torture by her husband.

Subsequently, Krishna Das was arrested and lodged in jail for 27 days. Thereafter, the intensity of physical and mental torture to Kabita Baruah Das by her husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law increased by the day and culminated in her murder on August 20.
