Fake notes flood Mizoram

AIZAWL, April 18 - With seizure of fake Rs 2,000 currency notes with a face value of Rs 54 lakh in recent times, the Mizoram government is worried over counterfeit notes being pumped into Mizoram.

Aizawl Superintendent of Police F Lalhuliana said the police have made seven seizures of fake currencies, mainly in Rs 2,000 denomination.

�Most of the fake notes were of Rs 2000 denomination. A few of them were fake Rs 500 notes. The total face value of fake notes that have been seized during the last two months is Rs 54,01,000 lakh,� he said.

The first seizure of fake currency during this year was made on March 24 when 252 fake notes in Rs 2,000 denomination and two Rs 500 fake notes were unearthed. On March 28, Rs 2,000 fake notes with a face value of Rs 1,98,000 was seized. The biggest catch was made on April 14, when 1,300 fake notes in Rs 2,000 denomination were seized at Bairabi near the Mizoram-Assam border. The face value of the fake notes was Rs 26 lakh. Altogether, 11 persons have been arrested in this connection
