Agartala, March 19 (IANS): Tripura Police have arrested two people, both residents of Bihar's Kishanganj district, with fake Indian currency notes while depositing them in a bank here, police said.
"Police arrested Sarwar Hussain (39) and his brother Ghulam Ajghar (25), both residents of Bihar's Lohar Patti Road in Karbala Chowk under Kishanganj district while depositing Rs 40,000 in their account at a bank here on Saturday," a police spokesman said.
According to the police, of the Rs 40,000, the bank officials found eight fake notes of Rs 1,000 denomination and 18 fake notes of Rs 500 denomination.
A senior Tripura Police officer, quoting intelligence and media reports said that the police in Bangladesh, acting on a tip-off, on Friday arrested Pakistani national Mohammad Shaukat Ali at Chittagong while entering Tripura with a huge quantity of fake Indian currency notes.
"In a subsequent search, the police in Bangladesh recovered fake Indian currency with a face value of Rs 19.70 lakh from him. Shaukat told the police interrogators that he is just a carrier and is paid around Rs 20,000 for each trip to Bangladesh," the police officer said on condition of anonymity.
The detainee has also admitted to the police that the fake notes are printed in Pakistan and sent to India via Bangladesh.
The police officer said: "Security forces in Northeast India are on alert for fake currency notes being circulated - which is strongly believed to be the handiwork of the Pakistan spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)."
