Failure to discipline auto drivers decried

By STAFF Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 26 Decrying the State Governments failure in disciplining the autorickshaw drivers by enforcing the faremeter system that has been mandatory across the country, public activist Prof Deven Dutta has said that the developments since the installation of faremeters in autorickshaws in April 1992 (the system ran barely for two months) expose the sheer irresponsibility, ineffectiveness and callousness of the government, especially the Transport and Home departments.

Prof Dutta said the shameless surrender of the government before the autorickshaw drivers/owners, who came up with some ridiculous, irrational and motivated pretexts for abandoning the faremeter system, makes it clear that the authorities themselves are responsible for the growing lawlessness gripping the State in every sphere.

Prof Dutta said that it was illegal to run autorickshaws without faremeters but for reasons best known to the Chief Minister and the Transport Minister, autorickshaw drivers of Assam had been defying the law. He also questioned the rationale behind the mushrooming growth of autorickshaw stands anywhere and everywhere in utter violation of rules and norms.

Terming Transport Minister Chandan Brahma as a totally incompetent minister, Prof Dutta said that blatant illegalities were also being perpetrated in the operation of private buses running under the ASTC. He also lambasted the opposition parties for their silence on the issues concerning the chaotic public transportation scenario.
