By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 12 Members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today formed human chains all over the State to register their protest against the failure of the authorities concerned to complete construction of the four-lane National Highway in the State expeditiously. They also demanded inclusion of the left out areas in the four-lane highway project.

The students body said in a statement here this evening that when the Central Government has been planning construction of six-lane highways in other States of the country, completion of the construction work of the four-lane highway in Assam has remained behind the schedule. The work to construct the four-lane highway is progressing at a snails pace in Assam.

This has made the people of Assam face indescribable hardship. Therefore, it has become mandatory for the authorities concerned to complete construction of the four-lane highway on war footing, said the students body.

Moreover, it said, the four-lane highway project has not covered all the areas of the State. The Baihata Chariali to Jonai, Sagalia to Guwahati, Nagaon to Jayrampur areas have not covered by the project, it said, demanding steps to cover all these areas under the project.

It further demanded expeditious steps to complete construction of the portion of the four-lane highway project that links Guwahati with the Barak Valley via Dima Hasao district.
