SILCHAR, Nov 15 - Samarendranath Sen, former BJP MLA from Silchar, passed away at his Tulapatty residence here at 7.20 pm on Saturday. He was 80. He represented the Silchar constituency in the State Assembly in 1991.

According to Cachar district BJP sources, Sen was the first general secretary of the district BJP unit, which was the first district committee in the North East formed in 1980. In 1982, he was elected as the district BJP president and continued in this position till 1988.

Born on July 30, 1936, Sen had his early education at the Narsing HS School, Silchar, and did his graduation in Law from Kolkata. He is survived by his wife, son, two daughters and other relatives.

Kaushik Rai, president of Cachar district BJP, said that all BJP members and workers have been saddened at his death. �We have lost a veteran leader who made significant contributions to the party,� he stated.

Senior BJP leaders of the district attended the last rites of the former Silchar legislator today.
