Ex-MLA pitted against ex-wife in GHADC polls

TURA, Sept 15 - Nationalist Congress Party leader Admiral K Sangma filed his nomination on Monday for Babelapara constituency as an independent candidate for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls, slated for October 12. Yesterday was the first day of filing of nominations for the polls.

Admiral had won three elections to the Meghalaya Assembly. In 1993 and 1998, he won election as a Congress candidate and in 2003 as NCP candidate. In 2008, he lost the election.

Sangma is a close aide and brother-in-law of National Peoples� Party (NPP) chief Purno Agitok Sangma. He will be pitted against his estranged wife Christilla Marak, who is contesting from the same constituency on a Congress ticket.

Earlier, Admiral was denied NPP party ticket which was allotted to party loyalist Mikinson Ch Marak, an active party worker. The last day for filing of nominations is September 21.
