By Correspondent

HAILAKANDI, May 16 - Senior Congress leader and former Minister Gautam Roy and his six-year-old grandson Himabrata Roy received a notice from NRC official in Hailakandi to prove their citizenship. It has created a sensation throughout Barak Valley because Roy was the member of Assam Legislative Assembly and Minister for more than thirty years. His father late Santosh Kumar Roy was also an MLA from Katlicherra constituency of Hailakandi district in 1972. His wife Mandira Roy and son Rail Roy were also MLAs. Himabrata is the son of Rahul Roy.

One Johirul Ali Choudhury of Hailakandi district raised doubt over the citizenship of Gautam Roy and his grandson and submitted objection to NRC authorities. Accordingly notices were issued to them for attending the NRC Seva Kendra located in Nazrul Sadan of Hailakandi town on May 15 at 1 pm. Roy family received it on May 14 lately and it was not possible him to attend Hailakandi from New Delhi, sources said. He later applied for fixing another day for hearing. He reached Hailakandi today.

Expressing his reaction, Roy alleged that this is the glaring example of harassment of genuine citizens in the name of NRC. He said that he will maintain formalities but threatened to take the legal help in this regard.
