Ex-KHADC chief tears govt ordinance during session

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Aug 20 - Former Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member, Adelbert Nongrum today tore a Meghalaya Government ordinance inside the Council, stating it was like a snake seeking to poison the indigenous people.

The ordinance Meghalaya Local Administration (Empowerment of Traditional Institutions, Traditional Bodies, and Headmen in Governance and Public Delivery System) Ordinance, 2015 seeks to empower the indigenous community.

Nongrum differed and said the KHADC should pass a resolution to oppose the Government ordinance. We demand the Executive Council should pass a resolution to oppose the Ordinance of the State Government, Nongrum from the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) said during a special session of the District Council.

The Opposition in the Council, All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA), also echoed Nongrums views and demanded that the Council should pass a resolution opposing the Ordinance brought by the State Government.

KHADC CEM PN Syiem assured the House that the EC would soon write to the State Government to make its stand clear on the Ordinance. We would also examine the possibilities of bringing a resolution in this regard during the next session, he said.

Meanwhile, the Council passed the KHAD (Appointment and Succession of Chiefs and Headmen) Rules, 2015, to define the powers and functions of the traditional institutions and their offices.
