Ex-DGP complains of EVM malfunction

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 23 - Former DGP Hare Krishna Deka today alleged that the EVM on which he cast his vote could be faulty as the paper slip generated by the VVPAT attached to the EVM showed the symbol of a candidate other than the one he voted for.

Deka told reporters that he reached the polling booth set up at Lachitnagar LP School early in the morning. The voting did not start at 7 am as was scheduled. I had to wait for some time. But I was the first voter in the booth, he said.

Deka said when he noticed that the VVPAT system showed a different candidate's name, he took up the matter with the polling officials.

I was told that there is no provision to cancel the vote. However, I can challenge it. But if my claim is proved wrong, I was warned of consequences like fine and even jail. As there was criminal liability, I opted not to challenge it, he said.

However, Deka said he would lodge a complaint with the Election Commission.
