GUWAHATI, May 18 � The district administration, Kamrup (Metro) today launched an eviction drive along the National Highway to get hold of the land acquired for widening of the highway.
Official sources informed that the eviction drive will continue for the next few days.
�Although the occupants were asked to vacate the land many a times, they did not oblige to the appeal, which necessitated the drive,� the sources stated.
Meanwhile, the administration today also launched eviction drives on the GS Road (near Kar Bhawan) to vacate the footpaths for the use of pedestrians only.
�A number of shops were evicted from the footpath on the GS Road by a team of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the Dispur Circle officer. Another eviction drive was initiated near Bahini river to evict the encroachers,� sources stated. Further, the corporation also seized four mini trucks loaded with vegetables from Machkhowa area. The administration, it may be mentioned, had evicted the Mackhowa bazaar recently.
�The vegetables seized were later distributed to SOS Village,� sources added.
